Janice Thies – Professor, Cornell University

Janice Thies is an Associate Professor of Soil Biology in the Department of Crop and Soil Sciences at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY. Organic Recovery Development, LLC (“ORD”) has engaged Professor Thies, in her individual capacity as an expert in the field of soil microbiology, to provide advice regarding experimental protocols, testing procedures, quality control and quality assurance programs, and to assist in forming a regional network of soil scientists from leading agricultural universities in the regions in which ORD will operate.

Professor Thies is the Director of Graduate Studies for the Field of Soil and Crop Sciences at Cornell and is the Cornell International Professor of Soil Ecology. She was a 2006 American Society for Microbiology Latin America International Professor and has led five international workshops on ‘Methods for Studying Soil Molecular Ecology’. She is an active member of the Cornell Institute for the Social Sciences theme project entitled ‘Contentious Knowledge: Science, Social Science and Social Movements’, the Cornell Cooperative Extension Soil Health Program Work Team, the Faculty Committee on Program Review and the Multistate S-1022 Regional Project Committee. She has served as an expert consultant to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the National Institute for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Iran and the USDA Biotechnology Risk Assessment Research Grants Program. Dr. Thies has served twice on Scientific Advisory Panels for the US-EPA and on Research Grant Panels for the USDA. She is a past member of the Editorial Board of the journal ‘Applied and Environmental Microbiology’ and a past member of the Faculty Senate for the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, where she served on the Executive Committee and as both Secretary and acting Chair. Dr. Thies is a member of the American Society for Microbiology, International Society for Microbial Ecology, Soil Science Society of America, Agronomy Society of America and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. In her research program in soil ecology, Dr. Thies focuses on developing, testing and implementing methods to: assess soil biological diversity, activity and abundance; remediate degraded soils; and improve soil management practices to ensure the long-term sustainability of agricultural ecosystems.
