Bernadette Thavarajah brings over 22 years of experience in all aspects of integrated waste management to Organic Recovery. A civil engineer by training, Bernadette has planned and designed programs to reduce waste, increase recycling, conserve natural resources and achieve sustainability, in order to minimize adverse impacts on the environment.
As a professional engineer Bernadette managed several multi-million dollar construction projects in politically and environmentally sensitive areas for the San Antonio River Authority, and designed pumping and instrumentation systems for wastewater treatment plants. Her interest in responsible waste management was piqued during her work at engineering companies in New Hampshire, where she designed and supervised several projects including landfills, landfill closures, transfer stations and materials recovery facilities. Bernadette served as field engineer/ manager of the waste to energy facility in Penacook, New Hampshire for the Concord Resource Recovery Cooperative, developing the “put or pay” contract details and supervising the construction of the facility which was designed/built by Wheelabrator. Bernadette widened her scope of waste management through environmental impact studies, designing composting and recycling facilities for a variety of waste feed-stocks.
Previous positions held by Bernadette also include Director of Engineering, Recycling and Hazardous Waste Management for Polk County, Florida, and Solid Waste Manager for Publix Super Markets, Inc, a major privately held grocery chain in the Southern United States. At Publix she developed waste reduction and recycling programs and spearheaded Publix’ initiative for sustainability through resource conservation and pollution prevention programs.
Bernadette is committed to development of technologies that recycle “wastes” into useful products, using processes that minimize pollution and entail efficient use of resources. She graduated magna cum laude from the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, 1980.
